Langtang Valley

The closest of the big treks to Kathmandu: up the Langtang valley to Kyanjin Gompa, with an optional climb of Tserko Ri for wide views of Langtang Lirung.

Current notice: Update, 29 October 2026: a flash flood on 26 August 2026 damaged Syabrubesi and the road to it. A local official said on 29 October that the trek had reopened by an alternative route from Dhunche through Thulo Syabru; the Nepal Tourism Board had not confirmed this. Check current access with a registered trekking agency before you go.

7–8 walking days · highest point Tserko Ri (optional) 4,984 m · Moderate · best months Mar, Apr, May, Oct, Nov · Start and end: Syabrubesi · Protected area: Langtang National Park

Getting there

Normally by road from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (113–120 km; 7–11 hours by bus or jeep). See the current notice above.

The route

  1. Syabrubesi — 1,460 m
  2. Lama Hotel — 2,470 m
  3. Langtang — 3,430 m
  4. Kyanjin Gompa — 3,870 m
  5. Tserko Ri — 4,984 m

Know before you go

The valley has a history of landslides and avalanches: the 2015 earthquake avalanche destroyed Langtang village. Take an acclimatisation day at Kyanjin Gompa before going higher.

A licensed guide is required on this trek (Nepal Tourism Board rule since 31 March 2023).

Most of these treks go above 3,000 m. The US CDC advises: once above 3,000 m, sleep no more than 500 m higher each night, add an extra day for every 1,000 m you gain, never go higher with symptoms (headache, nausea, dizziness), and go down if they get worse.
